Sometimes late is hardly better than never

A man is tried for a felony, convicted, sentenced and serves his whole term.
Then the DA's office that prosecuted him admits that it misunderstood the law and will ask the court to overturn this man's conviction.
I suppose this clears his record of the felony, but I can't imagine that he's particularly grateful.
This seems like a case where the DA's office ought to be liable for damages, but I'm guessing they're probably immune from such lawsuits.
