What do musicians think of file-sharing?

According to preliminary results of a survey by the Pew Internet Project, more than one third think that they "are not bad for artists because they help promote and distribute an artist’s work."
Less than a quarter think that they "are bad for artists because they allow people to copy an artist’s work without permission or payment." And more than a third agree with both statements. So 70% agree with the former statement and 58% with the latter.

Furthermore, 37% say free downloading has made no difference to their careers, 35% say it has helped their careers, 15% don't know, 8% say it has both helped and hurt and only 5% say it has only hurt their careers.

Both the full report [.pdf] and a "full data memo" are available on the Web [via Michael Geist's Internet Law News].
