House backs away from toning down PATRIOT Act

Only half of Congress wants us to have our civil liberties!

The Republican-led House bowed to a White House veto threat Thursday and defeated an effort to block the part of the USA Patriot Act that helps the government investigate reading habits. The effort to defy President Bush and limit the law's powers lost by 210-210, with a majority needed to prevail. GOP leaders kept the roll call vote open for an extra 23 minutes as they persuaded about 10 Republicans to change their votes to "no."

"Shame, shame, shame," Democrats chanted.

"You win some, and some get stolen," Rep. C.L. Otter (R-Idaho) said.

My Representative, Joe Hoeffel, voted in favor of keeping our reading habits private. How did yours vote?

Matthew Hunter has "a webpage up with links to the contact page of each representative who changed their vote, along with a suggested letter. This serves as a reminder that liberty is not for cowards [via Declan McCullagh's Politech list].
