Losing Faith: a Continuing Saga On Monday Alberto Gonzales told the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee that President Bush had personally denied security clearances needed by a Justice Department ethics unit (the Office of Professional Responsibility) that would have allowed them to look into the role that government lawyers played in approving the warrantless eavesdropping program that monitors Americans' international and domestic telephone calls and emails without approval of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) Court. On the face of it, this kind of surveillance is defined by FISA as a felony. The OPR investigation had been undertaken at the request of members of Congress. I consider this another egregious (and personal) seizing of power by the President of the United States.
